A Baby in a Basket Week 2

Exodus 1

15 Then Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave this order to the Hebrew midwives, Shiphrah and Puah:

16 “When you help the Hebrew women as they give birth, watch as they deliver. If the baby is a boy, kill him; if it is a girl, let her live.”

17 But because the midwives feared God, they refused to obey the king’s orders. They allowed the boys to live, too.

The Fear of The Lord

Exodus 2

1 About this time, a man and woman from the tribe of Levi got married.

2 The woman became pregnant and gave birth to a son. She saw that he was a special baby and kept him hidden for three months.

3 But when she could no longer hide him, she got a basket made of papyrus reeds and waterproofed it with tar and pitch. She put the baby in the basket and laid it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile River.

4 The baby’s sister then stood at a distance, watching to see what would happen to him.

Your greatest contribution to the kingdom of God may not be something you do, but someone you raise.

What will happen?

Each day of our lives we make deposits in the memory banks of our children.

Mentor Moses

Exodus 2:23 — Many years later, Egypt’s king died. The Israelites continued to moan because of their bondage, and they cried out to be rescued from their oppression. Their cry for help ascended to God.

Many years later…

Exodus 3

1 Now Moses kept the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the desert and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb.

2 The angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire from the midst of a bush, and he looked, and the bush burned with fire, but the bush was not consumed.

3 So Moses said, “I will now turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush is not burnt.”

4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him from out of the midst of the bush and said, “Moses, Moses.”

And he said, “Here am I.”

5 He said, “Do not approach here. Remove your sandals from off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.”

6 Moreover He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.

I am the God of your father.

Moses’ father appears to have been just an ordinary man whose faith in God and love for his infant son caused him to defy the king of Egypt.

The Fear Of God

Hebrews 11

23 It was by faith that Moses’ parents hid him for three months when he was born. They saw that God had given them an unusual child, and they were not afraid to disobey the king’s command.

24 It was by faith that Moses, when he grew up, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter.

25 He chose to share the oppression of God’s people instead of enjoying the fleeting pleasures of sin.

26 He thought it was better to suffer for the sake of Christ than to own the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking ahead to his great reward.

27 It was by faith that Moses left the land of Egypt, not fearing the king’s anger. He kept right on going because he kept his eyes on the one who is invisible.

Verse 23 — They were not afraid to disobey the king’s command.

Verse 27 — Moses did not fear the king’s anger.

We will believe in the baby in the basket.
